God’s ‘No!’ to Superstition

Superstition seems to be as rife today as ever!

I have been struck by the number of times I have heard people on the TV say, ‘Touch wood’, and superstitions abound concerning black cats, walking under ladders and the number 13.

Doreen and I knew a hairdresser who would not open up on Friday 13th for fear of the consequences!

In the first volume of former President of the USA Barack Obama’s memoirs of his time at the White House, he tells how when running his campaign to get elected people would give him lucky charms.

Although he declares himself not to be a superstitious person, nevertheless he admits to carrying a few of them in his pocket and keeping an eye as to which he had on him on a good day of campaigning.

As Christians we have been delivered from all superstitious practices, charms and the like. They can hold folk in bondage and can fill us with fear, tools of Satan, and some of us, before we became believers in Christ, may have suffered in this way.

But now we are free! As Jesus said, ‘If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed’ (John 8 v.36). We know now as the children of God that He holds all things in His hands, including our lives, and that we are not at the mercy of chance, luck, or superstitious practice. Rather we have a loving heavenly Father who watches over us, knows what is best for us, and who will navigate us through life by His Word, the Bible, and by His Spirit dwelling within us.

He also is the One under whose Hand ‘all things work together for good’ (Romans 8 v.28) for those who are His.

Superstitions? What a lot of nonsense! Rather trust Christ and rest your life in Him.

Anthony
