The Breath of God

I have always enjoyed hymns. Even as a child I had my favourites.

At our eldest son’s wedding last September we sang ‘Living Hope’ by Phil Wickham, and since then it has become a firm favourite. One line has really caught my imagination –

‘Your buried body began to breathe.’

Of course, I know Jesus was not breathing when they put Him in the tomb and that He was breathing when He met the women in the garden. But to think of that moment when Jesus’ broken body suddenly started to breathe has really blown me away.

As a Midwife I have waited anxiously for the first breath of a baby – to hear the wonder of that first cry – and I have held the hand of those who have taken their last breath and known there was no more I could do.

Jesus’ first breath in the tomb means so much to us as Christians. Because He lives, when we take our last breath in our earthly life we will take our first breath in our glorious new life with Christ!

We will be more alive then than we have ever been, so do not fear death because the best is yet to be. - Doreen

P.S. from Stephen: It is easy to find this song Doreen mentions on YouTube: Phil Wickham Living Hope. Here are some of the lyrics:

Who could imagine so great a mercy?

What heart could fathom such boundless grace?

The God of ages stepped down from glory

To wear my sin and bear my shame

The cross has spoken, I am forgiven The King of kings calls me His own

Beautiful Saviour, I'm Yours forever Jesus Christ, my living hope

Hallelujah, praise the One who set me free

Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me

You have broken every chain There's salvation in Your name

Jesus Christ, my living hope

Then came the morning that sealed the promise Your buried body began to breathe

Out of the silence, the Roaring Lion Declared the grave has no claim on me

Hallelujah, praise the One…

Thank God for the gift of Salvation - that your sins are forgiven

If you are coming on Sunday, please come prepared to share a phrase which you find helps you to describe God. God of ages / King of kings / beautiful Saviour / Roaring lion - are four such descriptions found in the song lyrics I have printed.

If you aren’t coming to church please text, email or phone me a phrase you find helpful when thinking about God so that I can share it on Sunday. God of Ages / King of kings / Beautiful Saviour / Roaring lion - are four such descriptions found in the song lyrics I have printed.

Due to the complications of copyright law the live-feed on facebook will be muted whenever we listen to a song. The article posted earlier in the day will tell you what songs we will be listening to, so you can find them beforehand on YouTube.

I look forward to sharing a message based on scripture with you on Sunday – Stephen
